You will need:

  • Grape juice
  • Grape Jelly (and bread, of course)
  • Grapes, or any other grapey substance (if you or your child has allergies to grapes, you may substitute another early fall fruit, such as apples, pomegranates, or squash)

As per usual with our kids rituals, we are focusing on a particular point of rit. Since Mabon is the time of the second harvest, and usually the time to harvest grapes for wine, I thought that a little focus on the seasonal reapings was a good idea. As always, feel free to add or tweak this ritual to fit your specific desires.

Make sure to place the things that you will need in your sacred space; perhaps a butter knife for spreading jelly onto the bread, or an already prepared slice or two. A nice cup for the grape juice (you can use white grape juice as well, it doesn’t stain nearly as badly if spilled), a nice dish of grapes, etc.

If you like, since we have gone over casting circle and inviting the quarters in previous rituals, you may do so. Make certain that you guide your little ones, so they learn to do things properly…

Place your harvested items on the altar, so that they may receive all of the energy that will be raised.

State your reason for being in circle using these or similar words:

"Great Lord Dionyses, you have blessed us with your bounty of delicious grape juice, grape jelly, and the grapes themselves. Thank you for all of your wonderful gifts that make the sweet tasty treats that we enjoy so very much! As we share in your harvest, know that all that you have given to us is greatly appreciated, and today we honor you and your gifts!"

Have the children raise their arms to the sky and say aloud:

"We thank you Lord Dionyses for your wonderful gifts!"

Ask the kiddos to visualize long twisting grape vines going straight up to the sky, so that the Gods can bless them to grow a good harvest next season.

When they have finished, allow then to charge the food and drink using these or similar words:

"We ask that you bless this food and drink, that as we take in the goods that you have provided, we will remember where this bounty has come from, that it will nourish not only our bodies, but our hearts and spirits as well."

Be certain to offer food and drink to the Ladies and Lords first, then feel free to nibble on the tasty treats in front of you! Be sure to eat and drink all that you bring in, as it is offensive to leave charged food. When finished, thank the Gods for attending in whatever manner you chose, offer the drink and food left for the Ladies and Lords back to the Earth by pouring it outside where it can be consumed be the spirits.

Again, this isn’t a complete ritual. However as we grow together as pagan parents and follow the rituals for each sabbat, you will notice that all of the components of a full rit are gone over in detail. The idea here is to keep it short and simple, so that with practice and guidance, by the coming of age for your youngin’, he or she will be able to complete a full ritual with ease.

    Brightest Blessings, and have fun!!
