You will need:

  • A medium-sized container of cleaned late summer berries, such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc.
  • Some sort of whole grain or home-made bread
  • Some sort of fruit juice (preferably 100% juice)
  • A chalice and offering dish of some sort

In this ritual as in the past several rituals that have been written for the kiddos, we are going to introduce another vital part of ritual. In this rite, they will be learning about The Simple Feast. Since Lughnasadh is the first of the harvest festivals, this is a perfect time to give them the opportunity to understand and revere the importance of the giving of ones-self to the Lady and Lord, in the form of food and drink. As with all of the children’s rituals, have fun with this one, and lead by example!

Have your little ones gather all of their supplies, and head to your sacred space. As is typical for these rituals, have them state the reason for being in ritual at this time, with these or similar words:

I stand before the Grain God, Lugh, and look in wonder at the fruits of his time, the bread made from the wheat of the fields, and the berries harvested just ready. The heaviness of the breads that we make, and the sweetness of the berries that you provide. I have come to honor you in the ways of the old ones, please, share in the feast of your time, sweet and gentle Goddess of the harvest and Lord of the grains.

Have your kiddos place a piece of bread for each person in attendance, and one to offer to the Lady and Lord and a nice pile of berries on each piece of bread. Have each child place their dominant hand over the plate and say these or similar words:

I give these cakes of the season all of the energy in the reason that I am here. Bless them, that as we eat of them we will be given life as you have given to the plants we have harvested to make them.

Place a piece of the bread into your offering dish. Do not eat yet, but you may pass the bread out. In the same manner, have them hold their dominant hand over the Chalice of juice and say these or similar words:

I give this nectar of the season all of the energy in the reason that I am here. Bless this liquid, and allow it to flow through me and give me the life that you have given the fruits of the fields.

Add some of the juice from the chalice into your offering dish, and have the kiddos place their dominant hands over the offering dish and say:

Giving Lady and Gracious Lord, you have given of your flesh and blood to us. Allow us to return the favor by giving of our energies to you. By infusing these gifts of the harvest with our energy, and offering them to you, we return to you the essence of life. Long and hard you have worked to produce these gifts, and now partake of your labor. May you understand the gift, and allow that understanding to flow through us as well.

Now you may eat and drink. Have fun and enjoy the yummy treats that the Gods and Goddesses have provided!

    Blessed Be!
