Correspondences: Lesson 1

The word correspondence means that something works with something else. For example, if I wanted to call upon Artemis, a corresponding herb to use would be tarragon. I would use a silver candle, and maybe a piece of cypress wood. Those are all things that correspond, or go along with rituals to Artemis. There are color correspondences, directional correspondences, Deity correspondences, and lots more! We will start with the directional correspondences.

Let’s begin by learning the four directions. They are North, East, South, and West. Now, each direction has an element that it belongs with. North is for Earth, East is for Air, South is for Water, and West for Water. Those are correspondences. Each direction is represented by an element, and they work well together. There are also colors that represent each direction, and those are correspondences as well. North is green, East is yellow, South is red, and West is blue. So the colors work for the directions and the elements! Let’s put all of this together:

North is for Earth and the color is green. Green is also used just to represent the Earth, or just the direction North. These are some of the correspondences for the North.

East is for Air and the color is yellow. Yellow is also used just to represent the Air, or just the direction East. These are some of the correspondences for the East.

South is for fire and the color is red. Red is also used just to represent fire, or just the direction South. These are some of the correspondences for the South.

West is for water and the color is blue. Blue is also used just to represent water, or just the direction West. These are some of the correspondences for the direction West.

1. What is a correspondence?

2. What are the four directions?

3. What are the four elements?

4. What color would you use to represent North?

5. What direction would you be corresponding with if you used the color blue?

6. What element would you be corresponding with if you used the element fire?

7. What color would you use to represent East?

8. Can the correspondences be used separately? Or do they have to be used with all three put together?

9. Can you think of any other representations that may be used as a correspondence, and if so, for what?

Correspondences: Lesson 2

There are also lots of other correspondences that we use as witches, and they range from different colors, herbs, moon phases, tarot cards and many, many others! Some Deities are specific to certain colors or herbs; some herbs help with different elemental magicks, and so on. The best thing to do when looking for correspondences is to choose which Deity or magickal elements you will be working with, and go from there. We’ll cover some basics here, but keep in mind that this isn’t a complete list, and that there are many other resources out there that you can find correspondences as well.

RED is the color of passion and fire, use it in spell work for your hearts’ desire.

PINK is the color of friendship and love, use it in magick to get help from above.

ORANGE is the color of strength and power; use it to feel strong in your needed hour.

YELLOW is the color of sun and the God, seek him for help when you need a lot.

GREEN is the color of Earth and money; use it when you need a gift for your honey.

BLUE is the color of water and healing, use it for health when your head is reeling.

PURPLE is the color of Spirit and intuition, seek out this color you don’t need permission.

BLACK is the color to keep evil at bay, use it when you want to keep bad things away.

WHITE is the color of the Goddess and things that are pure, call upon her when you are not sure.

These are the colors and their meanings too, I made up this poem just to teach you!

1. Is this a complete list of color correspondences?

2. What other types of correspondences are there?

3. Can you think of any others?

4. What do we use the color green for?

5. What do we use the color pink for?

6. What do we use the color purple for?

7. What do we use the color red for?

8. What do we use the color blue for?

Correspondences: Lesson 3

Now that we have discussed some of the correspondences and their meanings, we will talk about what the correspondences do. They enhance whatever it is that you are doing, so make sure that in your research you are using things that are going to work with your purpose, and not against it. It’s also important to go with your gut, meaning that if you feel that you should use something, check to make sure that it is in accordance with what you are doing, but more then likely you will want to use it anyway. Most of our gut instinct or intuition is Deity guided, and therefore we should learn to go with it. Certain stones and crystals can be empowered with a different charge then is naturally occurring, for example, you may be on a walk in the woods and find a rock that you think is pretty or feels good to you. You can then charge that stone to do whatever you’d like it to do. Just make sure that you ask someone or read books on the properties of whatever the item is.

1. What does enhance mean?

2. What does intuition mean?

3. Who guides our intuition most of the time?

4. Can you charge an object to another purpose then what it is naturally meant for?

5. Should you do research on whatever object you are using the correspondences for?

6. Who do you think that you should ask about the meanings of the correspondences? Why?
