Cleansing: Lesson 1

Cleansing your magickal items is an extremely important step in any magickal work that you do. To cleanse an item magickally, you are washing away the energies of that object. The reason that we cleanse our items is so that when we use them, we are only using the energies that we have put into that tool. For example, if we were to go to a shop and buy a candle to use for a healing ritual for a friend, we would want to make sure that the candle is full of healing energies. That same candle that we buy and take home has been handled by maybe a dozen or more people, and their energies aren’t necessarily healing energies. They may have had a bad day, and been radiating negative energy, or maybe they were looking to buy that candle for a love or luck spell. Those types of energies are strong, but they’re not what you want the candle for, so we have to cleanse all of those other people’s energies out of that candle before we use it.

Cleansing: Lesson 2

There are some different things that you can do to cleanse your magickal tools before you use them. The most common way to cleanse is to use sea salt and water. This combines the element Earth and the element Water to ground and cleanse. We can also use sage as a cleansing tool, because the smoke from burning sage will purify whatever it touches. Sometimes we will also use flame from a candle, or smoke from incense to clean out energy. When used with the sea salt and water, flame and incense smoke combine all of the four elements to make the cleansing balanced. For example, if we were to cleanse a new wand that we got to use in ritual, we would wash it with water that has sea salt in it to combine Earth and Water. The water cleans the wand and the salt helps to keep the object connected to the Earth. Next, we would pass the wand through the flame of a candle, because fire helps to transform the wand into something magickal instead of just a pretty stick. After that we would pass the wand over the incense smoke to help make sure that the wand is good at doing what we want it to do. We use incense smoke to represent Air, and Air is used to help with communication, that way when we pass our wand over the smoke, it makes sure that it is a good communicator with our intent.

Cleansing: Lesson 3

We have talked about why we need to cleanse our magickal items, and we have talked about a couple different ways to cleanse them. Make sure that you always cleanse your tools before you use them, so that the energies that you send out are yours, and not someone else’s.

1. Cleanse a magickal item. Use the four elements to do so, and explain what each element is doing to the item as you cleanse it. It can be something that you want to set on your altar, or something that you wear, like a piece of jewelry that is important to you. Remember all of the steps that we talked about in lesson 2.
