The Color Correspondence Game

by Wyntre

Let's face it, raising little witchlets is not an easy job. Teaching them their alphabet, colors, and numbers can seem to be a daunting task in itself let alone trying to ply them with the volumes of knowledge about our pagan beliefs. But there are ways to combine fun and learning, bringing together both our spirituality and basic skills.

It's is fun and easy and it teaches children their colors along with the with the magickal correspondences. Here is how to play:

Tools
  • 1 large piece of poster board
  • Markers in the following colors:
  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Purple
  • White
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Black

(Others can be used if you are feeling adventurous and you know the correct correspondences.)

    And the following poem:

Red is the color of power and love,
Orange is the color of energy from above,
Yellow is the color of our bright minds,
Green is harmony our heart finds,
Blue makes us serene and mild,
Purple is the spirit within you, child.
White is pure as the morning light,
Silver is peaceful like the full moon bright.
Gold is the power of the body and mind,
Black is the banisher of bad things we find.

On the poster board draw pictures using only one color for each picture ( we used pentagrams when my daughter was younger and now I let her draw the pictures.) Then say the rhyme while pointing to each individual color. In no time, your child will know their basic colors and the magickal correspondences of each.

Feel free to add things to the game or use it in different contexts. I have used this game to teach my daughter numerous things including the runes and tree magick. Most importantly, have fun with your little witchlet!!!

    Animal Flashcards

    -Ages 4 to 12

You can adjust the difficulty level of this game depending on the age of the child. Give the children magazines with pictures of animals in them or have them choose pictures from the internet. Younger children should give the cut-out pictures to adults. Older children can make the cards themselves. Take index cards and glue a picture to one side of the card. If the child is older, have them find out what kind of animal it is and write the name of the animal on the back of the card. If the children are hard of reading and writing, the adult can do this part. Then play a game with the cards. This is especially fun with two or more children. Let them compete against each other to see who can get the most right. For very young children, you can use easy animals such as a lion, tiger, giraffe, horse, dog, cat...etc. For older children, see if they can remember more difficult animals such as a wallaby, scissor-tailed flycatcher, blue whale, etc. For older children, you can add fun facts to the back such as food, habitat, lifespan, continent of origin, etc. Then you can ask a specific question for each card held up and children will learn more than the animal's name.

    Animal Speed Game

    -Ages 9 and up

This game requires a television set and a nature documentary whether it be a television program or a videotape. Set the children in front of the television with pencils and paper. As the video plays, have the children write down the names of as many animals shown as they can and one fact about the animal. (two or more facts for much older children). At the end of the show, see who has named the most animals. Animals that do not have a fact are not counted. This can be especially fun with older children because they will recognize animals in the film that are not mentioned by the narrator. These animals can be considered extra credit if they are correct.

    Picking Up Good Vibrations

You need: small objects belonging to yourself, other family members or your child's friends.

Have your child hold the object in their dominant hand. Tell them to close their eyes and feel the energy coming off the object. Ask them to tell you how the object makes them feel. What other things do they sense from it? See if what they say matches up with the personality and experiences of the person who owns it.

    Dream Work

Many things about our past, present and future are represented in our dreams. Psychic visions often occur during slumber since the conscious mind is at rest and not interfering with the sub-conscious.

    You need: journal and pen/pencil.

Upon waking, have your child think about any dreams or visions they remember having. While it is fresh in their mind, have them write it down in their dream journal. Have them include how it made them feel, any sounds they heard, textures or temperatures they felt. Both of you can analyze the dream for meanings. This is a great way to unlock the secrets of your subconscious. Have your child look for recurrent themes. I have a friend who knows that every time water is in her dream, it is a sign of some emotional issue. Try to pinpoint what symbols mean what in your child's dreams.
